Some thoughts on sourcing

A lot of my sourcing is done online, first finding the products on my suppliers’ websites. I’ve started sourcing in a really broad manner, slowly whittling the look down to the final products by seeing which pieces work best together. This means making, on our server, a folder titled ‘Images’ for each project. Into this folder go a lot of smaller folders. I save a pdf print of the page of the item that catches my eye as well as a picture of the item, both titled with the name of the product, in a folder named with the supplier’s company name. I do this over and over until I have an ordered and very, very full reference of any possible thing that might work for the project. I end up with up to five times the number of options I actually need. I then put pages together with my favourite pieces, starting with something like a sofa and then lay out the room on the page, placing a sidetable, lamp, coffee table or whatever that type of room requires to see what works best. I keep doing this until I have pages of options, sometimes changing the sofa or reconfiguring the whole look with completely new items to see which one will work best.

After the design has been agreed upon, I contact suppliers and ask them which pieces are available. Once that’s confirmed, the pieces are quoted, and pricing is provided to the clients for approval. Sometimes this means replacements have to be found at the eleventh hour because of cost. Generally, though, as I know the client’s budget, I will have sourced items from places that will more or less match that budget – just doing that saves me a lot of time, and is the smartest way to do it.
